It's Tough Livin' at Davis High

In a cold northern climate, Canada or elsewhere
Catkins are releasing, the tree's seeds to the air
Usually in September, earlier if opened by ravens
Living at most for 100 (one hundred) years
Less in the climate of Davis
It has many adaptations
All of which are swell
Epitome of Darwin's theory
Many traits on which I will dwell
Deceptively tough bark, lenticels, winged seeds
Who could ever guess that cool, moist soil
Is among my needs?

Welcome to the birch at Davis High
Such a dicot tree
Don't peel me
Plenty of horticulture at Davis High
But nothing here, compares with me dear

Davis' climate does not suit me, does not suit me at all
I really look pretty, pretty sad until it comes to the fall
I shouldn't even be here, on 14th street
My leaves are happy though, they think sun's real neat.

I won't live as long here,
'cause I have shallow roots
I don't think I'll survive beyond 2022 (twenty twenty-two)
But my offspring will reproduce
They will sprout and leave a legacy
Of a birch not a spruce

Welcome to the birch at Davis High
Such a dicot tree
Don't peel me
Scrapin' by at Davis Senior High
I must surmise, I will soon demise

State tree of New Hampshire
Source of birch beer
I am stuck here, when I should be being eaten by a deer
Water resistant bark
Indians used for canoeing
I used to be important
Now I'm just nothing doing

Last thing I want to tell you is,
I'm more amazing than you think
I take root in areas
Where fire has ravaged everythink (everything)
I'm a succession tree
I spring up in hours
And that is why the Celts believe
I have magic powers

Clarification: Birch trees do not really spring up in hours, I just used this as sort of a
figure of speech at the end because I desperately needed a word to rhyme with powers.
Birches are in fact some of the first tree to take root and sprout after a fire, but usually do
so about 50-75 years after the devastation. Thanks for listening to my podcast and you
are now free to sit back, relax and just listen to the amazing guitar playing of, no, not the Eagles,
but New York Minute, a cover band from Las Vegas.
